TOKANGA & TOUTAIOLA PROJECT

PROJECT BACKGROUND & INITIATIVES

The Ministry of Pacific People’s have been an invaluable partner in supporting our projects aimed at empowering children to become life providers for their families. Through their unwavering commitment, we have been able to commence our Tokanga and Toutaiola projects. These initiatives focus on equipping children with essential life skills, enabling them to develop into capable and self-sufficient individuals. Together, we are fostering a generation of empowered Pacific youth who are confident, skilled, and ready to embrace their roles as providers for their families.

We remain committed to supporting our youth. Together, we can overcome the challenges brought by the pandemic and build a stronger, more resilient community for our young people.

Tokanga: Toutupu gardening and community vegetable gardens

Our youth gardening initiative and community vegetable gardens have truly blossomed into something remarkable. Not only are these projects cultivating a love for nature and the environment among our young generation, but they are also bringing our community closer together. The sight of our youth enthusiastically tending to their own plots, carefully planting seeds, and watching their vegetables grow is a testament to their hard work and dedication. These gardens have become a vibrant hub of activity, where people of all ages come together to learn, share knowledge, and support one another. As we harvest the bountiful produce, the sense of pride and accomplishment is palpable. Our youth gardening and community vegetable gardens are not merely about growing food; they represent the nurturing of a sustainable future and fostering a strong, interconnected community.

Tokanga: Plantation work

The diligent efforts of our community members, young and old, have paid off as we are now reaping the rewards of our hard work. The Tongan Youth Trust - in partnership with the Papatoetoe Saione Parish, have worked together to ensure the safe-keeping of our plantation and Kuala harvest. Our kumala harvest is not only a source of sustenance but also a symbol of unity and strength, showcasing the power of our collective efforts as a community.

Toutaiola

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, fishing became more than just a recreational activity for us, the Tongan Youth Trust. With many individuals facing financial hardships and limited access to resources, we took it upon ourselves to go out to the sea and fish, not only for ourselves but for the well-being of our community. We gathered together, adhering to social distancing guidelines, and casted our nets with determination and hope. Every catch we brought back became a symbol of resilience and solidarity. We then distributed the fish amongst the vulnerable members of our community, ensuring that their plates were not empty during trying times. Fishing has taught us the value of selflessness and the importance of standing together to overcome adversity. Together, we have embraced the spirit of unity and service, showcasing the strength of our community even in the face of a global crisis.
