History of the Tongan Youth Trust

The Tongan Youth Trust, also known as To’utupu Tonga Trust, was founded with a clear purpose - a deep passion for young people. The genesis of this organisation dates back to 1994 when the idea was conceived by Rev. Ikilifi Pope during his time at Auckland University and Trinity Theological College. The aim was to create innovative models that would help young people address their specific needs and challenges. The guiding principle was rooted in theological values that emphasised practicality and a non-judgmental approach towards youth, regardless of their circumstances.

Having shared the vision with friends, Rev. Ikilifi Pope was fortunate to receive tremendous support and inspiration. This encouragement spurred them to commence their work in 1995, meticulously crafting plans and executing small community initiatives. Starting from humble beginnings in a room at Epsom Methodist Church, the Tongan Youth Trust commenced its operations with limited financial resources. This unassuming space became the inaugural office of To’utupu Tonga Trust/Tongan Youth Trust, symbolising the organisation's origin and humble roots.

As the Trust gained momentum, Rev. Ikilifi Pope was joined in 1996 by a like-minded colleague, Seneti Fiusati. Together, they embarked on a journey to develop and implement impactful programs for the Trust, leveraging their combined education and experiences from the University of Auckland and Trinity Theological College.

The To'utupu Tonga Trust (3Ts), widely known as the Tongan Youth Trust (TYT), was established in 1996 and officially became a charitable trust in 1997. With a group of individuals hailing from various backgrounds such as church ministry, law, and social work, the Trust began its journey with a strong commitment to assisting Tongan youth. Initially centred in Central Auckland, the Trust has since expanded its reach to encompass community projects, form extensive partnerships, and build robust networks, all while continuing to help countless young and vulnerable people. Despite this growth, The Tongan Youth Trust remains unwavering in its dedication to supporting Tongan youth, both within its local community and beyond.

As the new millennium unfolded, The Tongan Youth Trust found itself adapting to the changing times. Embracing fresh ideas, cultivating new skills, and collaborating with a younger cohort of youth workers, the Trust has evolved over the years. This evolution has brought about expansion, welcoming additional staff members and catering to a diverse mix of Tongan youth. However, The To'utupu Tonga Trust has not strayed from its core mission of assisting the Tongan youth; it has broadened its scope to provide aid to individuals beyond the Tongan community and now encompasses Pasifika youth and the Pasifika community.

Rev. Ikilifi L. Pope, the founder of this Trust, continues to nurture the organisation he established back in 1996. Supported by a team of individuals with expertise in youth work, community work, human development, and Pacific community culture, they persevere in their mission to guide and support the new generation of youth, while respecting the enduring passion that fuelled their endeavours from the beginning.

At Tongan Youth Trust, we pride ourselves on being more than just a conventional social service provider. Our mission extends far beyond mere assistance; it encompasses the holistic well-being of young people. We are committed to equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and values that will enable them to positively impact their communities and society as a whole.
